During the four year reign of Sarah Kerrigan, her Zerg Brood experienced many irritations and difficulties. Due to the advancement of Terran and Protoss technology, isolated portions of Kerrigan's broods quickly fell to the rebellious forces and, though reluctant to do so, the Queen of Blades was forced to try to enhance the already lethal Zerg aerial strains. Scourge had been taken advantage of most often on the battlefield, so Kerrigan picked stable individuals that were most aggressive. She isolated and re-engineered them, exposing the Scourge to massive amounts of radiation and raw Vespene gas. By doing this, Kerrigan further enhanced the strain in a similar manner to the Ultralisks during the Brood War.
The effect was far beyond what she expected: the Scourge's carapace toughed and its bones became much denser, forcing its muscles and overall body to stretch and grow. Forced cruelly by their mistress, the result was an entirely new Zerg creatures dubbed as the Zerg Bane.

Now the Zerg Bane, improved a hundredfold in comparison to its predecessor, is a powerful addition to Zerg Broods. This airborne melee attacker can engage, swarm, and chew through even the largest of ships if they aren’t provided with adequate defense. The new adaptations in the now more bat-like creatures include a beak that can shear off even neosteel with absurd ease and a further control of the hazardous gas housed in its body which makes working with the Bane easier for fellow Zerg units. Special glands secrete small quantities of an acidic compound during battle, enabling the piercing beak and slicing claws embedded on the end of each wing to do their deadly work even more quickly. This acid makes the Zerg Bane even more lethal. The Zerg Bane also still retains its kamikaze attack, but it can now control the explosives gases and suppress the spark of the combustion reaction until ordered by a Cerebrate to bomb an enemy. Though its appearance and attack is significantly different from its core genes, the Zerg Bane still has the same lust to assault, rend and break apart enemy spacecraft. For this reason, Kerrigan and her Cerebrate sycophants only loose the Bane upon enemy aircraft, luckily for ground forces.
